WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE GEM?

I get asked regularly, “WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE GEM?”
Without a doubt, it is the Paraiba tourmaline…not even a second thought.

WHY?

Because it is like having the Caribbean water trapped in a gem…this incandescent aura that gravitates through the stone that is truly captivating. I don’t have the adjectives to express how beautiful they are without demonstrating in person.

HISTORY

Initially discovered in the 1980s in Brazil and 20 years later almost identical green-blue tourmaline in copper-rich Mozambique and Nigerian mountains. The Brazilian deposit has been mined out, and since then the prices have responded to the scarcity.

So, what is considered the best Paraiba?

The most expensive are blue/green with a medium color in consideration of light to dark. Clarity is always relevant, but the market is accepting of inclusions.

Q&A | FROM OUR DESIGNERS

WHY DO YOU LOVE & HOW DID YOU DISCOVER PARAIBA’S?

Arunashi : This may sound cliché, but it really was love at first sight. I was all of 24 years old, and had just started a company trading gemstones in Japan. A stone dealer I had never met before called me out of the blue (literally, right?) and came over to show me his collection of stones. During the meeting he pulled a small parcel of stones I had never heard of before. It was Paraiba. When I saw these stones I was completely mesmerized. They were electric, and unlike anything I had seen before. I think there is some magic in this stone…to this day, I can’t stop gawking at them. My initial buy of that parcel also laid the foundation for me to start working with relatively unknown stones or lesser known stones at the time, the likes of demantoid, hauynite, alexandrite and such…

Graziela : It was love at first sight. I saw it and was immediately drawn to it. The first time I Set my eyes on it was in Tucson, about 15 years ago. No one knew about Paraiba, or even heard of It. When I found out Paraiba Tourmaline was from Brasil, my country, I went to visit the Batalha mine in the State of Paraiba. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. No other gemstone in the world shines in the dark, has a light and life that comes from within like Paraiba. The neon, electricity that it exudes is the most magical thing I’ve ever Seen and it’s rarity just made it sooo much more attractive to me.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE YOU HAVE DESIGNED WITH PARAIBA’S?

Arunashi : It has to be this elaborate cuff we did with a 23 carat Brazilian Paraiba..The stone is irreplaceable, and to die for. The design just is everything you can ask for …whimsical yet a very wearable piece of jewelry art. It showcases the Paraiba in a very unique way, yet does not take away from it at all, rather accentuates it. It is the kind of piece I would lie my work to be remembered for.

Graziela : I started designing with it so long ago and always believed that one day Paraiba will be the IT gem….that is now and will be forever. My first pair of Earrings that I designed are still one of my very favorite ones with paraiba slices and different shape diamonds and the last collection that I’m launching now is absolutely to die for!! Someone will Be very lucky to own it.
